The Beats Family

What are Beats?

"Beats" is a platform for single-purpose data shippers. These lightweight data shippers can send data from hundreds or thousands of machines and systems to Logstash or Elasticsearch.

Beats are great for gathering data. They sit on your servers, with your containers, or deploy as functions - and then centralize data in Elasticsearch. And if you want more processing muscle, Beats can also ship to Logstash for transformation and parsing.

The Beats family:

  • Filebeat - A lightweight shipper for log data.
    • Forget using SSH when you have tens, hundreds, or even thousands of servers, virtual machines, and containers generating logs. Filebeat helps you keep the simple things simple by offering a lightweight way to forward and centralize logs and files.

  • Metricbeat - A lightweight shipper for system Metrics.

  • Packetbeat - A lightweight shipper for Network Data.

  • Auditbeat - A lightweight shipper for Audit Data.

  • Heartbeat - A lightweight shipper for up-time monitoring.
    • Monitor services for their availability with active probing. Given a list of URLS, Heartbeat asks the simple question: Are you alive? Heartbeat ships this information and response time to the rest of the Elastic Stack for further analysis.

  • Functionbeat - A lightweight server-less shipper for cloud data.
